RIPON, Wis (WRPN)- Waupun firefighters responded to the intersection of East Main Street and Gateway Drive in Waupun Friday afternoon for a used cooking oil spill.
Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says a tanker truck spilled about 100 gallons due to an equipment failure. The leak had been stopped and the truck and driver remained at the scene. Oil dry was applied to the affected area.
The leak started on the southbound off ramp from U.S. Highway 151 to State Highway 49. It continued west to on State Highway 49/East Main Street. Traffic in the area tracked the oil even further.
Crews used 150 bags of oil dry and Waupun DPW provided a truck with a salt spreader. Sand was also spread throughout the area. There was a secondary crash at the intersection involving one vehicle. The oil spill is believed to be a contributing factor.
Oil dry was left on the roadway so that traffic could work it in. DPW crews will return today to sweep up the leftover debris.
