RIPON, Wis (WRPN)- Markesan Police and Fire responded to a fire in an apartment building at 58 South Bridge Street just after noon Thursday.
Two police officers arrived within minutes and began searching upstairs apartments as smoke emanated from the front door. They opened each door and forcibly entered some rooms looking for occupants until thick, heavy smoke forced them out of the building.
They located the lone occupant a 59-year-old man outside. He was not injured. It’s believed the fire was due to careless use of smoking materials in his apartment bathroom. He was cited for the offense.
The fire was limited to the bathroom although the building sustained moderate smoke and some water damage. The occupant was displaced and was working with his landlord on temporary accommodations.
A 25-year-old police officer suffered minor smoke inhalation and followed up with medical attention at a local hospital. He returns to service today. He is a three-year veteran of the police department.
